Director of Marketing Strategy
Remote | Contract |
The Girlfriend Doctor (TGFD) is seeking an experienced DTC/e-commerce Marketing strategist who wants a senior, high-impact role within an established and collaborative team.
The Director of Marketing Strategy will develop and lead TGFD's Marketing strategy to acquire and retain customers, strengthen brand positioning, and drive profitable demand in alignment with company financial objectives.
This is a strategy-led Marketing leadership role. You'll establish Marketing priorities, customer and acquisition strategy, campaign and launch strategy, positioning and messaging, promotional strategy, cross-channel strategy, strategic creative direction, and performance optimization.
You'll work closely with our Founder, Marketing Manager, and experienced channel specialists to translate strategy into execution. We're looking for someone who knows how to establish strong strategic direction, empower capable people to execute within their areas of expertise, and build a high-performing Marketing function without needing to personally own every project or execution detail.
TGFD operates with an outcome-focused, flexible work environment. This role is designed around strategic ownership, effective leadership and results rather than unnecessary meetings or activity.
What You'll Own
Marketing Strategy & Growth
- Develop and lead integrated Marketing strategy aligned with company growth objectives, financial targets, brand priorities, and available resources.
- Translate company objectives into clear Marketing priorities and strategic initiatives.
- Develop customer acquisition, retention, and growth strategies across relevant channels.
- Establish the strategic Marketing calendar in coordination with launches, promotions, product priorities, inventory, and other business initiatives.
- Identify emerging opportunities, performance risks, customer trends, and areas requiring strategic adjustment.
- Recommend where Marketing resources and investment should be concentrated based on expected business impact.
Campaigns, Launches & Promotions
- Own the strategic development of major Marketing campaigns, launches, and promotions.
- Establish campaign objectives, target audiences, positioning, offers, messaging, channel strategy, creative direction, and performance targets.
- Develop clear strategic Campaign Briefs before campaigns move into production.
- Partner with the Marketing Manager to transition approved strategy into coordinated execution.
- Evaluate campaign results and use insights to continually improve Marketing strategy.
Brand, Messaging, Copy & Creative Direction
- Help steward TGFD's brand positioning, messaging strategy, and brand voice in close partnership with our Founder.
- Develop messaging frameworks, campaign narratives, customer value propositions, offers, hooks, and strategic creative direction.
- Provide messaging and creative direction across landing pages, email/SMS, Paid Media, Organic Social, Amazon, launches, promotions, and other customer-facing channels.
- Review and edit Marketing copy to ensure it is persuasive, accurate, brand-aligned, and strategically sound.
- Strengthen or rewrite copy when needed while enabling existing Marketing resources and approved AI tools to support routine copy development.
- Establish frameworks and standards that enable the Marketing team to produce strong, consistent work without creating unnecessary approval bottlenecks.
Cross-Channel Marketing Strategy
We're looking for someone who fundamentally understands the major channels of a modern DTC/e-commerce business and can develop and evaluate strategy across them.
You should be strategically fluent in:
- Paid Media: Acquisition and funnel strategy, creative strategy, audience strategy, testing, CAC, ROAS/MER, scaling, and contribution economics.
- Organic Social: Audience and content strategy, platform positioning, engagement, organic growth, creator/influencer integration, and Social's role in brand, acquisition, and conversion.
- Lifecycle/Email/SMS: Segmentation, flows, campaigns, retention, subscriptions, testing, deliverability, and customer-value development.
- Website/CRO: Landing-page strategy, customer journey, offer presentation, merchandising, testing, and conversion optimization.
- Amazon: Marketplace positioning, merchandising/listing strategy, promotions, advertising, channel economics, and Amazon's relationship to the broader DTC business.
You do not need to personally execute every channel. You do need enough expertise to establish strategic direction, effectively lead specialists, evaluate recommendations, interpret performance, and recognize when a strategy needs to change.
Specialized Amazon execution may be supported by a dedicated internal or external resource.
Marketing Performance & Profitable Growth
- Monitor and interpret Marketing performance using financial, customer, campaign, and channel data.
- Partner with Finance and channel owners to understand Marketing spend, revenue performance, acquisition efficiency, and contribution economics.
- Use metrics such as CAC, ROAS/MER where appropriate, conversion, retention, contribution economics, budget performance, and campaign performance to guide strategic decisions.
- Identify underperformance and opportunities for optimization.
- Recommend strategy based on profitable growth—not revenue growth alone.
- Clearly communicate Marketing performance, risks, opportunities, and recommended actions to leadership.
How You'll Work With the Team
TGFD has an established Marketing team with functional specialists and a Marketing Manager responsible for coordinating Marketing operations and execution.
A simple way to think about the partnership:
Director of Marketing Strategy:
What are we doing, why are we doing it, who are we trying to reach, and is the strategy working?
Marketing Manager:
How do we execute that strategy reliably?
You'll provide clear strategic direction and work collaboratively with the Marketing Manager and channel specialists while respecting established areas of ownership and expertise.
This role leads through clarity, expertise, influence, collaboration, and accountability—not by owning every execution decision.
What This Role Is Not
This is not a traditional Marketing Director role where one person becomes responsible for personally executing or approving everything produced by the department.
You will not ordinarily own:
- Routine project management, task management, asset tracking, or deadline management.
- Day-to-day Paid Media, Social Media, Lifecycle/Email/SMS, or Amazon execution.
- Graphic design or routine creative production.
- Routine approval of every Marketing asset.
- Inventory management, Event operations, or Technology implementation.
- Affiliates or Wholesale channel ownership.
- Serving as the production copywriter for all Marketing communications.
You will be expected to understand the work deeply enough to provide strong strategic direction, evaluate quality and performance, edit messaging and copy when needed, and help specialists do their best work.
Who We're Looking For
We're looking for a well-rounded DTC/e-commerce marketer with 7+ years of progressive Marketing experience who has moved beyond channel-level execution into strategic Marketing leadership—but still enjoys being close to the work.
The right person brings strong strategic judgment without requiring a large corporate infrastructure to be effective. You should be equally comfortable developing an integrated Marketing strategy, reviewing a landing page or campaign message, digging into performance data, collaborating directly with channel specialists, and working closely with a founder.
This role is particularly well suited to someone who has helped build or grow a founder-led or entrepreneurial consumer brand and enjoys the pace, collaboration, resourcefulness, and hands-on strategic thinking of a smaller organization.
We're also looking for:
- Experience with founder-led, entrepreneurial, or small-to-mid-sized DTC organizations; experience in consumer health, wellness, CPG, supplements, or a related category is especially valuable.
- Demonstrated success developing customer acquisition, retention, campaign, launch, and promotional strategies.
- Strong strategic understanding across Paid Media, Organic Social, Lifecycle/Email/SMS, website/CRO, Amazon/marketplaces, and other relevant DTC channels.
- Strong understanding of DTC/e-commerce economics and performance metrics, including CAC, ROAS/MER, conversion, retention, contribution economics, and Marketing budget performance.
- Excellent brand positioning, messaging, offer development, copy-editing, and strategic creative-direction skills.
- The ability to evaluate and materially improve Marketing copy across campaigns, landing pages, email/SMS, Paid Media, Social, and other customer-facing communications.
- Experience translating business objectives and performance data into clear, actionable Marketing strategy.
- Experience effectively leading specialists without needing to personally execute every function.
- Strong cross-functional communication, collaboration, judgment, and prioritization skills.
- Comfort working closely with a founder while also bringing independent strategic thinking and constructive recommendations.
- Experience using or directing AI-assisted Marketing workflows while applying strong human strategic and editorial judgment.
- Working knowledge of Amazon marketplace strategy. Deep Amazon execution experience is not required if you've successfully partnered with specialized Amazon resources.
- Experience with subscription/e-commerce models, founder-led brands, remote teams, organizational growth or transition, and scalable Marketing systems and processes is a plus.
How We Define Success
Over your first 6–12 months, we'd expect to see:
- A clear, financially grounded Marketing strategy aligned with company objectives.
- A disciplined strategic Marketing and campaign calendar.
- Stronger campaign planning before production begins.
- Clear, effective strategy-to-execution handoffs.
- Improved visibility into Marketing performance and economics.
- Stronger acquisition, conversion, and retention strategy.
- Effective integrated strategy across TGFD's major Marketing channels.
- Strong functional ownership throughout the Marketing team.
- Scalable Marketing frameworks, standards, and documentation.
- A Marketing organization capable of executing effectively without constant intervention from the Director.
About the Opportunity
TGFD recently completed a comprehensive organizational review and is implementing a clearer Marketing operating structure. This role has been intentionally designed to focus senior Marketing capacity on strategy, performance, optimization, and profitable growth, supported by defined execution owners and channel specialists.
We're looking for an experienced strategist who enjoys being close enough to the work to make it better while also knowing when to step back and let capable people own their areas of expertise.
